At this year’s Lessons and Carols Service on Sunday, December 22, 2024, the Sunday School children of St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Church brought the story of Christmas to life with a deeply moving pantomime of the beloved song “Mary, Did You Know?” The performance, seamlessly blending music, emotion, and reverence, was a highlight of the service and left the congregation in awe.
The children, dressed in traditional costumes representing Mary, Joseph, angels, and shepherds, beautifully portrayed the song’s poignant message of the wonder and divinity of Christ’s birth. Their carefully choreographed movements reflected the questions posed in the lyrics, evoking both the humanity of Mary and the profound mystery of her child, Jesus.
The performance opened with background music by the One Voice Children's Choir and as the children began their pantomime, each movement synchronized to the powerful lyrics. As the song progressed, the congregation watched in rapt silence as the story unfolded—Mary holding the infant Jesus, shepherds kneeling in awe, and angels lifting their hands in praise.
“It was such a profound moment,” one attendee shared. “The children conveyed the beauty and depth of the Christmas story in such a heartfelt way. It was impossible not to be moved.”
The video of the pantomime, now available for viewing here, has already been shared widely among parishioners and beyond. Comments continue to pour in, praising the creativity and dedication of the Sunday School team especially with the limited time it to to prepare.
Special thanks go to the Sunday School teachers and volunteers who worked tirelessly to prepare the children, as well as to the technical team who ensured the performance was a success.
As the service concluded, the spirit of the pantomime lingered in the hearts of all who attended, a poignant reminder of the miracle of Christmas. Truly, this was a moment to treasure and a testament to the gifts of our children and their ability to inspire us all.
